Updated: Thanks to Chris, I corrected an omission in the Chargify pricing (forgot to multiply chargify charges by 12). Based on the new data, Chargify seems to be expensive to start with and only starts converging at about 500 customers. I’m going to change my recommendation to Recurly as it has a more gradual slope and is cheap to start with.
Since I only found outdated comparison of these services, I decided to create my own spread sheet to compare them. I am sharing the results for others interested. I’ve tried to normalize each service so we are comparing apples to apples (e.g. subtracted typical gateway charges from CheddarGetter Blowup plan which includes a gateway, Included only the recurring billing portion of BrainTree pricing and subtracted typical merchant/gateway fees from Saasy). The graph below show the cost/customer vs the number of customers.
Assumptions:
Unit Price: $20
Transactions per user: 12 (monthly)
Sassy Transaction Rate: 2.6% + 0.75 OR 6.6% (subtracted average 2.3% merchant account rate and 0.20/transaction gateway/merchant fee)
Chargify Costs: numbers beyond 10000 are guessed/interpolated. You’ll have to negotiate custom pricing with them.
The graph doesn’t change much at various price points.

Conclusion:
Most Expensive: Saasy is way too expensive. If I’ve made an error in their pricing calculation, please point out.
Cheapest to Start: BrainTree is cheapest until you have about 50 customers
Long Run: Recurly comes out cheapest in the long-run
Of course this is comparison on price only. You should also consider that with Chargify and Saasy you’re locked into whichever gateway your pick as the data is not portable (future regulations may change this). However, if you ever need to negotiate a better pricing on your gateway, you’ll need to have all your customers re-enter their data if using Chargify or Saasy.
Update:We ended up going with Chargify as they allowed multiple subscriptions easier and we anticipated having multiple transactions per customer per month which will end up costing more on a per transaction model (Chargify is per customer)
There are also feature disparity between each of the services. It depends on your business model and what you really need.
Overall pick: Recurly (best pricing in long term, does not lock you into a particular gateway.

Think you have a slight error in your calculations. If you’re wanting price per customer over a year, then the Chargify numbers need to be multipled by 12. If you want cost per transaction per customer then you want to remove the multiple from the other vendors. A corrected version means all vendors converge at their per-transaction cost, and chargify converges at customers/ppm.

Good point Chris. I had missed the 12 multiplier for Chargify. I’ve updated the graph and data and corrected it. Now it seems like Recurly is the best choice. Chargify is expensive to start with. Depending on how quickly one gets to 500 paying customers, one may pay a significant portion of collected dues to Chargify until the critical mass. According to their home page, Recurly now has a $69 monthly fee, which would not be a real cheap start…
